Hi Flynn,
Fascinating to read excerpts from the 5 major writers you mention; Hemingway, Rowling, Thompson, Kafka, and Vonnegut.
I think it's a fine idea to read great writers to learn from and emulate the way they write.
In fact, my writing teacher includes exercises in which a student spends a week reading a particular author, then writes a 500 word piece in her/his style.
Accomplishing a piece in the style of a distinctive writer brings new tools and skills, and since writing is thinking, new perspectives.
A gentle nudge. I imagine you formatted your article so that it was a quick and easy read -- and obviously, a great many people have perused it.
And, learned a lot — as I did.
Still, as I read, I couldn't help thinking you might take your own advice. I found your writing a bit awkward, with unnecessarily repetitive words.
Perhaps, in the interests of getting it out you dashed this piece off quickly.
Even if you did, it's a bit oxymoronic that you post an article suggesting people learn from the greats, when your own writing -- at least in this specific piece -- is cumbersome, and leaves room for improvement.
With Love,
Jonathan : )
